Families Fight To Keep Bothell School Open

BOTHELL, Wash. —

Hundreds of parents, students and teachers rallied together to keep a Bothell elementary school open that’s been recommended for closure.

About 400 people attended the Northshore School District meeting Tuesday night to discuss the board’s recommendation that Woodin Elementary School be closed and it’s students reassigned to Wellington or Hollywood Hill elementarys.

Many parents said they fear such a transition will come with a severe learning curve, as 24 percent of the school’s students are Hispanic.

Also at risk is the school’s dual language program. If closed, the program would only go to one of the two school campuses, wiping out years of work for both students and teachers.

One of the reasons the school is up for possible closure is its building is too old and there isn’t enough funding for upgrades.

The school board will make its final decision May 13. If it decides to close the school, students would be moved to the other two schools in September.
