Marysville Students Want End To Strike

MARYSVILLE, Wash. —

More than 100 students are carrying signs outside school district headquarters in Marysville Tuesday, calling on the district and striking teachers to settle.

Students Stage Protest

Police were expecting between 500 and 1000 people at the protest, KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reported. 80th Street between State and 40th Streets were open to local traffic only.

The students are carrying signs that say, "Get it done," "Enough is enough," "I want school," and "Back to the books."

The students are encouraging drivers to honk as they pass. Police are keeping the street clear.

There is a large police presence nearby.

The strike by 700 teachers is in its fourth week, and classes have yet to start for about 11,000 students.

Talks were set to resume Tuesday at 10 a.m. at an undisclosed location.

Since classes have already been canceled through this week, the district will need to make up at least 19 school days. By state law, school must be in session for 180 days.

The student demonstrators are passing time by playing "Twister" and hackey sack.

A boom box is playing music from Pink Floyd with the lyrics "We don't need no education; we don't need no thought control."

In the Lake Stevens school district, students were in their second day of class since a two-week teacher strike ended last weekend.
