PORT ORCHARD, Wash. —
Richard "Mitch" Mitchusson, 70, is still being held on $200,000 bail as more women continue to come forward with allegations against him including assault, fondling and stalking, said Kitsap County sheriff's deputies. The allegations date back to 2005.
KIRO 7 reporter Karen O’Leary caught up with Mitchusson as he was entering court. When asked about the charges, Mitchusson told O’Leary that he doesn’t understand why he’s being charged.
Since the case first went public, sheriff’s deputies said as many as 20 women have now come forward with similar allegations. The women are all saying that he hugged them, kissed them or touched them inappropriately against their wishes.
Many people said that since he was the mayor of Poulsbo for 14 years that they were simply afraid to report what happened.
The most serious charged filed so far concerns a 68-year-old woman. Deputy prosecutor Barbara Dennis said the woman was bedridden and attached to an IV as she was recovering from surgery. She said Mitchusson came to her house uninvited, got into bed with her and touched her breasts and private parts.
Mitchusson told the judge in court Thursday that he suffers from Pick’s disease, similar to dementia. It’s unclear if it’s part of his defense.
Wilson said that detectives determined there was probable cause to arrest Mitchusson after police discovered a pattern of criminal behavior that included inappropriate sexual contact with at least three adult women who are known to Mitchusson.
Police said the investigation revealed that Mitchusson's actions occurred at the victims' homes or places of employment during the January 2008 to March 2009.
He served as Poulsbo's mayor from 1985 to 1999.
Mitchusson will be back in court next month.
