Fake Deputy Using Scam To Get Cash From Businesses

Police in Olympia said they've received three reports of a man calling businesses pretending to be a deputy and saying they have one of the businesses' employees in custody.

Police said the man calls the business, identifies himself as a Thurston County deputy sheriff, and tells the person on the phone he has arrested a fellow employee of theirs for DUI, and that employee asked the deputy to call on their behalf for bail money.

The caller says the fellow employee has cash for the bail but that the jail does not accept cash. He then asks the person to wire the money to a specified location.

In the three cases that were reported to police, the caller was successful one time.

Police said anyone who receives such a call should not give out information about themselves or fellow employees.
