Prosecutors said a 15-year-old boy assaulted a Metro bus driver in Tukwila last Saturday. According to court documents, the 56-year-old bus driver was beaten unconscious and was choking on her own blood when police arrived.
That boy was charged with second- and third-degree assault.
Two other boys, ages 16 and 17, were charged with first-degree malicious mischief for allegedly breaking windows on the back door of the bus and damaging the door frame.
When the teens appeared in court in Seattle, their relatives, who declined to be identified, told KIRO 7 reporter Alison Grande police have the wrong boys.
"It's not my son and my nephew and they weren't close to bus 124. They were on bus 150. I just want for the record to straighten that up that they picked the wrong boy," said one family member.
Watching the court proceedings was Rick Sepolen from the bus driver's union.
"We're always very vulnerable out here. It heightens your awareness of the potential violence and you're an easy target for people who choose the things that were done to this operator," said Sepolen.
A man who's the older brother of the 15-year-old boy and the cousin of another said he was there at the time the beating took place and he and the boys were on another bus.
"It probably happened 30 minutes after we were off that bus, maybe 40," said the man who asked to be identified only as Taylor.
Two of the teens remain in custody. One teen, who is on electronic home monitoring, is allowed to ride the bus to school but is prohibited from using the route where the assault occurred.
