EVERETT, Washington —

Four people, including two children, were struck by a vehicle Tuesday afternoon while walking on a sidewalk in Everett, police told KIRO 7's Lee Stoll.

The collision happened near the intersection of Broadway and Everett Avenue. The group consisted of a father, his 16-year-old son, and his nephew and niece, ages 2 and 8, police said. None of them suffered life-threatening injuries.

(Editor's note: Police originally said a woman was involved in the crash. The above sentence supercedes that report.)

Police said a vehicle traveling northbound suddently swerved onto the sidewalk where the family was walking, struck a light post and hit all the family members. Officers said they believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.

The family and the driver were taken to a hospital to be treated for various injuries. The father, Chauncey Filbert,  suffered two broken legs, sources told Stoll.

A witness told Stoll the post fell on one of the family members and that a stroller was bumped.

Though the children suffered broken bones, cuts, and bruises, Filbert's family members said Filbert likely saved the children's lives by shielding them and pushing them out of the way.
