Cameron Johnston, 20, and Roy Espiritu, 17, died and four others were hurt after the speeding Ford Explorer flew off Alki Beach Road and into the chilly water early Sunday morning.

Police said Espiritu was driving and Johnston was in the front seat and all six people in the vehicle had been drinking heavily just before the crash.

At a vigil near the scene on Monday night, Johnston's mother and his foster father appealed to young people not to drink and drive.

"All I've been doing is crying and wondering," said Richard Sitting Horse, Johnston's foster father. "The question is 'Why him?' He was such a good kid. He was very talented."

Johnston was a Tulalip and Muckleshoot Indian who was gaining national recognition as a powwow dancer, his family said.
