SEATTLE —

Pitcher Felix Hernandez signed a new contract with the Seattle Mariners Wednesday afternoon.

Officials with the Mariners said Executive President and General Manager of Baseball Operations Jack Zduriencik announced that the team and Hernandez have reached an agreement on a new contract.

On Thursday, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported that the team and Hernandez agreed to a seven-year, $175 million contract, which would be finalized before spring training.

The deal makes Hernandez the highest-paid pitcher in Major League Baseball history.
