SPANAWAY, Wash. —

Autopsies to be conducted on Wednesday could provide police more clues as to what led to the deaths of a Spanaway family whose father killed himself after a police chase led to a crash.

Neighbors held a candlelight vigil Tuesday night outside the home of David F. Stewart, his wife, Kristy Sampels, and their 6-year-old son, Jordan Stewart after a day in which authorities discovered each of the three dead.

Investigators said David Stewart, a soldier at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, likely killed his son inside their home before taking state troopers on a high-speed chase through Tumwater early Tuesday morning.

Troopers said that when his car crashed, Stewart fatally shot himself. They also found Sampels in the car, dead of a gunshot wound to the head. Investigators said they believe Stewart shot her, but do not know when.

Jordan Stewart's body was found in an upstairs room when deputies went to check on him at the family's home.

The boy was enrolled for a few days last September at Camas Prairie Elementary School, but was taken out of school, a representative of the Bethel School District told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News.

At the evening vigil outside the Stewart house, neighbors lit candles and said Stewart and his family kept to themselves. One neighbor described the seldom-seen boy as happy and David Stewart as upbeat.

"Always was uplift(ing), always smiling, always laughing. We'd always crack jokes and never had a problem with the military. He liked it," said Allen Carter, who lives next door.

Neighbors described Kristy Sampels as extremely ill, and said that she was bedridden after several surgeries.

"There has been, like, three or four times that I've heard an ambulance and the Fire Department come here, come to their house," said Shari Carter.

The neighbors said they never heard a sound from the house -- described by detectives as full of trash and with Christmas decorations still up.

Kristy Sampels' 10-year-old daughter was found safe with her biological father in Oregon.

The Army is conducting its own investigation. Officials would not comment until Wednesday.
