SEATTLE —

Police in Tukwila deployed pepper spray on a crowd Friday morning that had lined up at Southcenter Mall to get a limited edition shoe.

Hundreds of people started lining up Thursday night because the Champs sports store in the mall was going to start selling the Air Jordan 11’s at 4 a.m. Friday. As that hour approached, police said things started to change as more crowds arrived and people started cutting in line.

There were a couple small scuffles, and then a fight broke out, which prompted police to use pepper spray, KIRO 7’s Jeff Dubois reported.

When 4 a.m. rolled around, police told the crowd no one would be able to get in to buy shoes unless everyone calmed down. Officers tried to let a couple people in at a time, but people kept trying to push their way in.

A quick Google search revealed similar scenes occurring across the country.

By KIRO 7’s 6 a.m. newscast, Dubois said things had calmed down at the mall, enough for some people to get in and buy shoes.
