UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. —

Firefighters battled a blaze in a cloud of thick smoke at a home in University Place after the homeowner said she heard an explosion.

Fire crews had been concerned that someone may have been in the burning home, but the homewner told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Kevin McCarty that no one was inside.

Firefighters are battling the flames defensively because it’s too dangerous to remain inside the home in the 5300 block of 87th Avenue Court West.  Five engines from West Pierce fire are at the scene.

The homeowner said she heard an explosion before the flames erupted at ab0ut 10:35 a.m.

The fire burned through the basement and into the home,  the Tacoma News Tribune said.
