A two-alarm fire at an assisted living facility in Tacoma prompted an evacuation on Monday morning.

Fire crews responded to Life Manor, located at 1601 S Union Avenue, just after 6 a.m. following reports of a fire in the facility's kitchen and activity center.

The fire was out by 7:30 a.m., but firefighters were still in the process of getting smoke out of the building.

More than 150 people were evacuated from the six-floor building to a nearby school, Life Christian Academy.  They will be placed in temporary housing.

A spokesperson for Tacoma Fire Department said that 44 residents received treatment, mostly for shortness of breath. Three people were hospitalized for smoke inhalation. 

The cause of the fire was not known on Monday morning.
