Fire Rips Through Home East Of Auburn

AUBURN, Wash. —

A family of 12 is homeless after their house was destroyed in an early morning fire Tuesday.

Firefighters were called to the house on the Muckleshoot reservation at 172nd Avenue Southeast and 384th Street shortly before 4 a.m.

Firefighters arrived to find the house fully involved in fire and flames leaping several stories. Though 22 firefighters battled the flames, the home's remote location kept the crews from getter there sooner. Firefighters could only keep the flames from spreading as the family watched their home burn.

The homeowner, Eric Hungary, said the house was a wooden structure that was at least 50 or 60 years old and has been in the family for generations. There were also several mobile homes on the property where family friends were staying.

Hungary said the family lost everything in the fire and is now homeless. He said a faulty extension cord ignited the fire in his daughter's bedroom, but investigators have not yet determined the official cause.

The family tried to use hoses to douse the fire before firefighters arrived but the flames were too fierce. Only one side of the home remains standing.

Hours later, the family returned to the home to see if anything could be salvaged.

The family is temporarily staying in a hotel.

The youngest member of the family is 3 months old.
