Fire Sign Honors Longtime School Volunteer

LACEY, Wash. —

A fitting tribute to a longtime school volunteer was unveiled at Olympic View Elementary near Lacey on Thursday.

A fire lane sign labeled Guy Ploegman Drive now marks the entrance to the fire lane in front of the school.

Ploegman worked for 24 years as a 911 dispatcher for Fire Comm in Lakewood, but he retired early so he could be a stay-at-home dad for his daughter Amanda.

The North Thurston School District PTA says Ploegman volunteered at Olympic View Elementary for years helping to install playground equipment, delivery cookie dough for fundraisers, helping with Walk-A-Thons, and helping out on countless field trips.

Guy Ploegman passed away on December 7, 2009 after battling ALS.

Ploegman’s wife Wendy was on hand Thursday as her daughter Amanda helped unveil the sign in her father’s memory which will now stand outside the school to honor his dedication and care for the students and the community.
