Firefighters In Mop-Up Phase After Containing Blaze Near Port Townsend

PORT TOWNSEND, Wash. —

Firefighters have contained a fire that burned in brush and trees near a Port Townsend-area neighborhood on Labor Day.

In a briefing early Tuesday morning, the Department of Natural Resources said the fire is essentially out. Firefighters are in the mop-up phase and will be looking for hot spots over the next three days.

Two 12-year-olds and an 11-year-old admitted to starting the fire, which spread across 30 acres and threatened to force people from their homes in the neighborhood near Cape George Road and Beckett Point Road.

Brad Gallagher said the fire began five minutes after he first heard bottle rockets.

"I run out and hear the kid call for a fire extinguisher. Before I could run back in the house and grab my dad, it was 50 yards -- at least -- up the hill," Gallagher said.

The fire filled the area around Discovery Bay with smoke.

A few miles away, neighbors hosed down their properties and packed up their cars after firefighters warned them to prepare for evacuation, said KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Graham Johnson.

"They said they would give me a one-minute warning," an unidentified neighbor said.

No mandatory evacuations were needed. No one was hurt.

The three boys who were playing with fireworks have not been arrested. Investigators said there's no decision yet about whether they'll face any criminal charges.
