The Deer Mountain fire sent flames and thick smoke into the sky. It has burned about 12 acres and firefighters said it is about 75% contained.

The fire was reported about 6:00 p.m. Sunday near 155th Avenue Northeast and Jordan Road.

Three homes have been evacuated.

"It's been very dry in that area and really bad up there," said Darlene Davis, who lives nearby.

A helicopter is on loan from the Tripod Fire in Eastern Washington and spent Monday dumping buckets holding 250 gallons of water over the fire.

About 90 people are battling the fire, including 8 inmates from the Monroe Minimum Security Unit. They will return to the fire lines at 8:00 a.m. Tuesday.

The cause is under investigation.
