GRAHAM, Wash. —

A man vanished while fishing in Lake Kapowsin and apparently drowned, Pierce County sheriff's deputies said.

Detective Ed Troyer said the 49-year-old Tacoma man was with a friend Wednesday in a 10-foot flat-bottom boat when the friend decided to fish from an island near the middle of the lake.

The friend told deputies he last saw the man, who stayed in the boat and was not wearing a life jacket, about 12:30 p.m. The missing man reportedly can't swim.

Divers searched the water near the island but had trouble swimming through debris on the lake's bottom, KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reported. They suspended operations Wednesday night.
