Flood Watch Canceled For Western Washington Counties

SEATTLE —

The National Weather Service Sunday canceled its flood watch for Thurston, Lewis, Mason and Grays Harbor counties that had been in effect for two days because of possible minor flooding from the Skokomish and Chehalis rivers. I n addition, the weather service also canceled its urban and small stream flood advisory for King, Pierce, Snohomish, Kitsap, Skagit, Whatcom, Clallam, Island, Jefferson and San Juan counties.

The flood watch was called off at 7:30 a.m. and the flood advisory at 1:35 a.m., KIRO 7 reported.

Weather service meteorologist Johnny Burg said the flood watch and the flood advisory were canceled because there wasn't as much rain as expected in the region the past two days and snow on the ground was not melting as quickly as expected.

Burg said that western Washington has had snow in historic proportions this month, with 13.3 inches recorded at the Seattle-International Airport from Dec. 13-26, the most since Sea-Tac got 22.1 inches in December 1968.

Because of unseasonably cold temperatures for western Washington, the snow did not go away for more than a week.
