Former UW Staff Member Dies After Setting Self On Fire

SEATTLE —

A former University of Washington staff member has died after he set himself on fire in the middle of Red Square, according to a UW press release.

The 61-year-old man, who has not yet been identified, was rushed to Harborview Medical Center with second- and third-degree burns. He later died.

Witnesses said he poured gasoline over himself, then set himself ablaze.

Spokeswoman Helen Fitzpatrick says it happened about 1 p.m. Thursday in Red Square on campus.

His name has not been released pending a positive identification from the medical examiner’s office and notification to his family.
