Four Sailors Killed In Seattle Crash Identified

SEATTLE —

A car traveling at high speed in south Seattle slammed into a power pole Saturday night, killing the four young men in the vehicle and briefly cutting off power to 2,500 nearby homes.

"It's a real sad situation," said Fire Department spokesman Lt. Harold Webb. He said just one car was involved in the crash.

The car, a BMW, was northbound on Rainier Avenue South and traveling "at what we believe to be excessive rates of speed," said police spokesman Officer Sean Whitcomb.

"The four individuals who were in the BMW unfortunately were all killed instantly," he said. The vehicle "is upside-down here in the southbound lane, and it is facing southbound."

The victims are identified as 22-year-old Carlos Garcia-Son, 26-year-old Brian Lane, 22-year-old Anthony Cox, and 24-year-old Clinton Campbell. The Naval Station in Everett identified them as sailors stationed on the USS Abraham Lincoln.

The crash severed the power pole, causing live wires to go down and power was lost to 2,500 homes in the immediate vicinity, Whitcomb said. A northbound "witness vehicle" was caught up in the wires but the driver was rescued unharmed, he said.

Rainier Avenue, a north-south thoroughfare in the city's South End, was closed for several blocks in both directions as police investigated, Whitcomb said.

Within an hour and a half of the crash, power had been restored to all but about 400 customers, said spokesman Larry Vogel at Seattle City Light.
