A lawsuit alleging that Fred Meyer grocery stores have been "systematically" overcharging for their meat products was filed Monday morning, KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reported.

The class action lawsuit claims up to 1 million consumers in Washington, Oregon, Alaska, Utah and Idaho paid more than they should have because labels on meat packages showed more weight than the package contained.

A Fred Meyer employee, Dave Galegos, is one of three people filing the suit. He told a Portland TV station that the company failed to fix an inaccurate computer pricing system.

In court documents, the plaintiffs in the lawsuit said experts found that samples of meat purchased at 30 Fred Meyer stores were lower than the weight on the label by as much as five ounces. Of the 257 samples tested, about 97 percent overcharged the consumer by an average of $0.16 per package.

Fred Meyer issued a statement in response to the lawsuit that said it "has strict guidelines and policies in place for ensuring that the price per pound charged to customers is accurate, fair and consistent. We expect every associate to adhere to those procedures."

The company said that while it has not yet seen the lawsuit, "we take these allegations very seriously and are conducting a thorough review of this matter."
