Funeral Set For Victim Of Jewish Charity Shooting

SEATTLE —

The funeral for the woman who was fatally shot at a Jewish organization in Seattle is scheduled for Monday afternoon in Bellevue.

Pam Waechter, 58, was the mother of two adult children and a graduate of the University of Washington.

She was a convert to Judaism who became president of the Bellevue temple from 1988 to 1990.

Waechter was one of six women shot by an intruder Friday at the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle office building.

Naveed Afzal Haq, 30, is being held on $50 million bail, pending charges.

King County prosecutors plan to file murder and attempted murder charges by Wednesday against Haq, who is from the Tri-Cities area.

A spokesman for the prosecutor's office said officials are considering whether to file a charge that could bring the death penalty.

Police and the FBI said the shooting was a hate crime. They said Haq blamed Jewish people for U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East. He found the Jewish Federation in Seattle in an Internet search.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported Haq, a Muslim, had converted to Christianity last winter through an evangelical church -- the Word of Faith Center in Kennewick. The leader who baptized Haq, Albert Montelongo, said he stopped attending meetings and said he was going to Seattle to find a job.

Pam Waechter grew up in Minneapolis as a Lutheran. She and her husband moved to Seattle in 1979. After raising their two children, Waechter graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in nutrition.

At the Jewish Federation she worked as a fundraiser, emergency services caseworker and volunteer coordinator.

The funeral for Waechter is scheduled for 1 p.m. at B'nai Torah Temple in Bellevue.
