Funnel Cloud Touches Down In South Sound



TACOMA, Wash. —

The Weather Service says a funnel cloud developed and touched down in Commencement Bay near Gig Harbor about 12:20 p.m.

It moved to Quartermaster Harbor, where it dissipated without causing any damage.

The weather spotter who saw it said it lasted for 30 to 40 seconds.

KIRO 7 Weather Anchor Rob Mayeda it's a good indicator of how unstable the airmass is over Western Washington.

"Thunderstorms are still possible until sundown," he said.

Funnel clouds are rare in the region but are possible in unstable air.
