BOTHELL, Wash. —

About 400 people turned out for a meeting Tuesday night, many to express their outrage over a decision to allow a tent city in their neighborhood.

TENT CITY Share Your Thoughts On The Controversy

King County Executive Ron Sims, who is running for governor, defended his decision to put the temporary camp for homeless people near a park-and-ride lot between Bothell and Kirkland.

"They're people saying they needed a safe place to stay. So I look forward to hearing all of your inputs today, thank you," Sims said.

But there were shouts of anger and loud applause from most in the audience, who were opposed to the decision and angry with Sims.

"We should be included in every decision that affects our community, because that's the democratic process. That's why you people have been elected to represent us," said Jack Devine, who lives in the area.

Homeless people tried to sway the crowd.

"Tent city helped me get off the street, a place to rest, because that was the only way I could wake up in the morning to try to find a job. And we are human beings," said Joe Pace, who is homeless.

After Sims told the crowd the tent city was going in despite the protest, tempers flared.

"We now have a common issue upon which we agree, and when the people are united they will never be defeated," said Scott St. Clair, to a thunderous ovation.

"Your reach for the governorship? Goin' down, my friend. This is not the way to do it."

A group of 20 to 30 homeless people is expected to set up the camp Monday near Brickyard Road Park & Ride at 15530 Juanita-Woodinville Way N.E.
