As the Puget Sound region’s garbage strike entered Day 8 on Wednesday, KIRO 7 checked around to see what worker salaries are like in other parts of the country.

Waste Management has said its final offer to striking teamsters is a six-year contract that would give the average driver a total compensation package of $98,000. The company said that on average, that breaks down to about $68,000 per year in wages, an increase in health benefits of up to $1,600 per month and a pension of more than $10,000 per year.

The union has disputed those numbers and told KIRO 7 they’re based on employees working overtime.

So how are other cities faring? KIRO 7 found that New York City sanitation workers make an average salary of $33,746, not including benefits and overtime.

Sanitation workers in Chicago just signed a new contract in May and made huge concessions. The starting salary for new workers went from $68,640 per year to $41,600, not including benefits.

As for truck drivers, the median salary is $37,772 per year.
