Firefighters responded to a report of smoke aboard the Soundrunner ferry at the Port of Kingston Monday morning.
Crew members preparing for the ferry's morning run noticed smoke coming from an interior compartment near the bow, evacuated the vessel and called 911 at about 6:30 a.m., North Kitsap Fire & Rescue said.
The smoke was caused by a problem with one of the 65-foot Spirit of Kingston's engines.
Ferry service continued with a back-up vessel.
