Governor Asks AG If Out-Of-State Gay Marriages OK

OLYMPIA, Wash. —

Following an announcement by the governor of New York that the state will recognize same-sex marriages from other states and with California poised to begin marrying gay couples next month, KIRO 7 reporter Richard Thompson asked Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire what she plans to do about the issue.

Thompson asked Gregoire, "Should and will Washington state recognize gay marriages from other states?"

Gregoire said she asked the state attorney general for an opinion on the issue Wednesday, but on Thursday afternoon the attorney general told the governor that the decision is not up to her.

"It would have to be a legislative decision," said Gregoire.

Gregoire is not endorsing gay marriage in the state, but said those married in other states will not lose any benefits if they move to Washington.

"For me, it's about equal rights. It's about equal benefits and we've done that in this state," said Gregoire.
