Grant County Sheriff's Deputy Dies In Crash

QUINCY, Wash. —

A Grant County Sheriff's deputy was killed in a car crash near Quincy Sunday night.

Grant County Emergency Services spokesman Kyle Foreman tells KIRO 7 that Deputy John Bernard was on routine patrol when he was involved in a one-car accident.

The crash happened at SR 283 and Road #5 NW, approximately nine miles south of Ephrata.

52-year-old Deputy Bernard was traveling westbound on Road #5 NW, left the roadway and rolled.

A citizen called 911 to report the crash around 7:20 p.m. Sunday.

Other deputies, along with units from Grant Count Fire District 3 and Quincy Valley Ambulance responded.

Deputy Bernard was declared dead at the scene.

The Washington State Patrol is conducting a crash investigation.

Deputy Bernard was a four year veteran of the Grant County Sheriff's Office.

He previously served as a Grant County Corrections Officer from 1997 to 2002.

He joined the City of Ephrata Police Department as a patrol officer in 2002, serving until 2006 when he became a Sheriff's Deputy.

A statement released on behalf of Sheriff Frank T. DeTrolio describes Deputy Bernard as a loving husband and father of two sons, one of whom is also a Grant County Sheriff's Deputy.

The statement goes on to say Deputy Bernard was a "tireless public servant whose commitment to law enforcement and serving the citizens helped make Grant County a safer place."
