Gray Whale Spotted In Puget Sound

SEATTLE —

A gray whale, possibly the same one seen twice this week, was swimming in Puget Sound on Thursday.

Chopper 7 first spotted the whale around 11:30 a.m. about half to three-quarters of a mile north of the Mukilteo ferry dock. Crews believe it may be the same whale that was in the Snohomish River last weekend and spotted near the Everett marina on Monday.

Howard Garrett of the Orca Network said a gray whale was spotted near Greenbank on Whidbey Island around 12:30 p.m.

Garrett said the whale fed in the area for about two hours and went back and forth about 200 yards off the beach.

He said the whale was rolling on its side “in typical feeding behavior” every couple of minutes.

It’s not known if there was shrimp or other food there for the whale.

He said after 2:30 p.m., the whale moved northward parallel to the beach.
