SEATTLE —

Two people in King County are believed to be the first in Washington to have contracted the newly recognized infection known as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, or SARS, the state Health Department said Friday.

Both have recovered and they were not believed to pose a health risk to the public, said Dr. Jeff Duchin, chief of Public Health-Seattle and King County's communicable disease section.

One case involved a crew member on a cargo ship that docked briefly at the Port of Tacoma. The other involved a child in Seattle.

Health officials said it's believed both individuals were exposed outside the United States.

Globally, more than 1,400 people are sick and more than 50 have died from SARS, which scientists believe is a new form of a virus that causes the common cold. Deaths have occurred in Hong Kong, mainland China, Vietnam and Canada. In the United States, there are 59 suspected cases and no deaths.

The disease -- with symptoms that include a fever over 100.4 degrees, coughing and difficulty breathing -- has spread mostly among health care workers. But in eastern Asia it has affected tourism and daily life, with many people wearing surgical masks or avoiding air travel.
