There's good news on the flu front for our area this year. The flu hasn't hit is as hard this year.

But something like it is making a lot of people sick right now. So if you're feeling chills, fever and you ache all over, you're not alone.

Marcia Davis says she's been lucky to avoid the flu her husband caught.

"He's been sick for about the last three weeks and it just keeps hanging in there," she said.

At Group Health, nurses say they're getting three times the expected number of callers with flu like symptoms.

Virginia Mason Internist Dr. Rebecca Ruud says they're seeing more and more cases in the last three weeks.

"Really out of the blue -- sudden fever, cough, sore throat, body aches. And it does seem to come on sort of with a big bang," Dr. Ruud said.

She says the illness they're seeing may or may not be the influenza bug vaccines protect against.

For most of us, rest, fluids, and pain relievers like Tylenol and Advil can help. But some people should call their doctor when symptoms first hit.

"I think if patients first of all have underlying illness, such as diabetes, kidney disease, are older over 65, have asthma or other lung conditions, I think we would err on seeing them earlier," Ruud said.

It's still not too late to benefit from a flu shot.
