Heavy Rain Causes Roof Collapse In Kent

KENT, Wash. —

Heavy rainfall caused damage to two businesses, including one partial roof collapse, in Kent early Wednesday.

The roof collapse happened just after midnight at the Olympic Steamship building on S. 212th St.

Kyle Ohashi with the Kent Fire Department told KIRO 7 no one was in the building at the time and damage was limited to a wing of the large concrete tilt-up warehouse.

Apex cold storage runs a business out of the warehouse and reported the public food storage was not affected by the collapse. Another company leases dry storage space in the same building, and it too was reportedly unaffected.

Engineers have been on the roof assessing damages to the Olympic Steamship warehouse.

Only one quarter of a mile away around the same time, another business suffered damages from the rain.

The second floor of the Specialty Metals business on S. 206th St. flooded last night, and employees, with the help of Kent firefighters, rushed to cover up computer systems, files and other valuables as the rain poured in through the roof that had been under construction.

A few hours later, employees were on the roof doing their best to keep the rainwater off.

The owner said they were able to get all of the computers moved out, but he is not sure how much damage was done.
