High-Speed Police Chase Ends In Downtown Seattle

Seattle, Wash. —

An early-morning police chase ended in downtown Seattle after a pursuit intervention technique, or PIT maneuver, was used by police to stop a fleeing car that had failed to stop in SeaTac, reported KIRO 7 Eyewitness News.

Police told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News that a King County police unit observed a car that had been reported as stolen stopping to pick up a woman on International Boulevard in the area of the Sea-Tac Airport Thursday. When officers tried to stop the car, it sped away northbound on Highway 99 and reached speeds of 85 mph.

The vehicle exited off the Alaskan Way Viaduct at Seneca Street and headed into downtown Seattle. Police said the chase ended at Eighth Avenue and Seneca Street, where officers blocked the man's vehicle with a PIT maneuver and the driver was taken into custody.

Part of the chase was recorded by Department of Transportation cameras.

A female passenger who was in the car with the man told KIRO that she didn’t know the man and was just getting a ride home. She said she kept “telling the driver to stop.” The woman was detained by police and then released.

The man was booked into the King County Jail on suspicion of driving a stolen vehicle and eluding police.
