DES MOINES, Wash. —

Smoke continued to rise from Rose's Highway Inn in Des Moines Monday morning in a fire that has destroyed the landmark restaurant.

Firefighters were having trouble reaching flames in the basement of the building, on Washington 99, just north of South 272nd Street.

The 64-year-old restaurant dating back to the roadhouse era burned in a fire reported at 3:30 this morning.

The restaurant was opened in 1939, nine years after the paving of what was then U.S. 99 -- the principal north-south route along the West Coast before Interstate 5 was built.

The signature dish at Rose's was old-fashioned pan-fried chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy.
