Will another round of May protests in Seattle happen Saturday?

SEATTLE —

Peaceful protesters said violence perpetrated by a select few wrecked their message a week ago on May Day, but the question now is whether they may try to get that message out again in a Mother’s Day weekend rally.

That’s the call to action KIRO 7 found Tuesday on Twitter, urging the Occupy movement to mobilize on Saturday. Some said May Day rallies around the world were marred by violence, and they called on supporters to “turn the streets into the world’s biggest loudspeaker on the 12th of May.”

An Occupy Seattle spokesman said a rally here is uncertain.

“There are some Occupiers who … have come up with the idea of having another rally,” Ian Finkenbinder said. “It’s not likely that we’re going to see a large-scale protest. There might be a protest, but I haven’t heard anything yet.”

SPD still looking for May Day vandals

At a late-afternoon news conference, Seattle Police Department Assistant Chief Jim Pugel told reporters there have been no new arrests related to last week’s outbreak of violence, so police are asking for the public’s help.

The department now has a dedicated phone number and email address for people to report May Day vandals: 206-233-2666 and mayday2012@seattle.gov

Asked if the department is ready for a rally on Saturday, Pugel said it’s as ready as it can be.

Should Occupiers attempt another protest?

People KIRO 7 talked to were contemplative about whether another organized protest in Seattle would be a good thing.

Alan Nishiguchi said the protest cost the eyeware company where he works, so we asked how he’d feel about another rally this weekend.

“We closed our doors, we closed early,” he said of the last protest. “You can’t let the thugs win, so, you know, I think the process needs to take place and that they should do it.”

Sheridan Bates of Bocz Salon said Finkenbinder’s comments about perhaps not having a rally were welcome news.

“The people that were the vandals, I mean, why wouldn’t they come out again?” Bates said. “I mean, isn’t that what they’re trying to do?”
