Humane Society Employee In Tacoma Fired

TACOMA, Wash. —

A Humane Society employee was fired today following the accidental euthanasia of five puppies at a Tacoma animal shelter last Friday evening.

Another Humane Society employee was suspended without pay for three days.

Shelter spokeswoman Kitty Gibbs told The News Tribune that the workers were both 15-plus year veterans of the shelter. One employee is a woman and the other is a man.

Gibbs said shelter officials instituted a new set of policies designed to ensure that what Humane Society officials have called "a tragic error" never happens again.

The 7-week-old mixed-breed puppies were euthanized less than six hours after a neighbor took them to the shelter. The owner of the dogs said they somehow escaped from his Point Defiance area home.
