JBLM soldier identified as man killed in officer-involved shooting

TACOMA, Wash. —

The active duty member of the military who was killed in an officer-involved shooting in Tacoma has been identified as a Joint Base Lewis-McChord soldier, according to officials.

 

On Friday afternoon, Tacoma police responded to a domestic violence incident.

 

Officers encountered Sgt. Prince J. Gavin at a home on 809 South M Street, where he was later shot.

 

Police Chief Don Ramsdell of the Tacoma Police Department told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News that Gavin felt threatened during a brief confrontation at the home.

 

Gavin was 29 years old and originally from Chicago. He had been deployed twice to Iraq and was returning from his latest tour in 2011.

 

According to JBLM, Gavin was going to be transferred to Fort Carson, Colo.
