Kent woman dies of gunshot wound 15 years after shooting

KENT, Washington —

An unusual homicide investigation is underway after a Kent woman died 15 years after being shot.

Lakessha Johnson, 34, had a bullet lodged inside her after being shot in 1996. She died last week from an infection of the gunshot wound. At the time of her death, she lived in Kent, but police say the shooting happened in the Renton or Seattle area.

Johnson was shot while riding in the passenger seat of a car that was leaving Skyway Bowl, the King County Sheriff's Office said. A man, Ronnie Brown, was in the back seat and said at the time that he picked up a bag that contained a gun and it went off and struck Johnson in the back.

Brown was convicted of charges related to the incident and served about two years in prison. He's currently in prison on unrelated charges, the Sheriff's Office said.

Sheriff's Office detectives and prosecutors said they plan to meet this week to determine if additional charges will be filed in the case.
