King County Garbage Workers Threaten To Strike

SEATTLE —

Drivers for the two largest garbage companies in Seattle are threatening to go on strike if they don’t receive affordable health care and safer working conditions in their new contract.

The more than 600 Teamsters’ current contract expires Friday night. If the Teamsters decide to strike it could cause disruption for 2 million customers.

Mayor Greg Nickels said he’s prepared to levy fines against the companies.

The last garbage strike in Seattle took place in 1997 when service was affected for three days.
