PERUGIA, Italy —

Amanda Knox appeared in an Italian court Tuesday for the first time since her murder conviction to face slander charges for saying she was beaten during questioning over the death of her roommate.

The 22-year-old former University of Washington student from Seattle wore a shorter haircut in Tuesday's preliminary hearing behind closed doors in Perugia.

At Tuesday's hearing, the slander case was postponed until June 17, when a new judge could be assigned.

During her murder trial, the former University of Washington student said Italian police beat her to try and get her to provide information about the murder of Meredith Kercher.

Police have denied misconduct and the Perugia Police Department is suing Knox and her parents for slander. The case prosecutor, Giuliano Mignini, said that there is no proof of the beating.

Knox's parents, Curt Knox and Edda Mellas, who also said their daughter was beaten, are scheduled to appear in court in July.

Her attorneys are moving forward with an appeal of her murder sentence that is scheduled for October 2010. In December 2009, an Italian court sentenced Knox to 26 years in prison for Kercher's murder.

Miginini has filed an appeal to lengthen Knox's sentence to life in prison.
