$1 Per Pack Cigarette Tax Increase Proposed

OLYMPIA, Wash. —

Lawmakers in Olympia on Wednesday considered an increase in the cigarette tax.

If the proposal by Washington Senator Rodney Tom of Medina is approved, the cigarette tax in the state would be raised by a $1 per pack.

KIRO 7 Eyewitness News anchor and reporter Chris Egert talked to smokers Wednesday. Most said they didn't think their habit should pay off the state budget deficit, when lawmakers have a habit to overtax and overspend.

One smoker, James Hayes, said he agrees with the proposal.

"I am not opposed. I will give what I've got. I think our president may have mentioned that," said Hayes.

An increase would raise a pack of cigarettes from an average of $5.38 to $6.30.

Anti-smoking advocates said the state would see a decrease of 41 million packs sold per year and save 6,300 adult lives.

Owners of smoke shops, such as D & A Smoke Shop in Fife, were concerned the tax increase could put them out of business. That shop's owner said the extra tax might force him to cut staff.

Supporters said the bill would raise an estimated $99 million in taxes.

A public vote is likely the only way such a tax would be passed.
