An investigation is under way after a 1-year-old was found injured near a man’s truck outside a day care center in Bremerton.

The Kitsap County Sheriff's Office said a father was in the process of dropping off his child at Chico Christian Daycare at 3670 Chico Way NW on Wednesday and parked his Chevrolet truck near the walkway at the front entrance.

He walked his child into the building at 10:20 a.m. and then returned to his truck and got into the driver’s seat.

Police said the man started the truck and put it into reverse when he overheard a child crying outside.

The driver told police that he did not move the truck and immediately put it into park and turned off the engine.

 The driver said he got out and walked around the front of the truck where he found a 14-month-old girl on the ground next to the rear passenger side.

Investigators said the child is enrolled in the day care center, but is not the driver's child.

The man picked up the child and looked around as one of the day care’s staff contacted him the parking area, took the little girl, and returned inside the building, investigators said.

The driver left the parking area, but returned when he was notified that an investigation had been started.

Police said it's unclear if the truck struck the child or if the child fell to the ground on her own.

The little girl was taken by a parent to Harrison Medical Center in Silverdale and then was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

Harborview Medical Center said Wednesday that the child suffered scrapes and bruises and may have a skull fracture.

An investigation into the incident is in progress.

A sheriff’s office news releases did not say how the child got outside the day care.
