Capitol building evacuated for unattended bag

Suspicious package at Capitol
A member of the WSP bomb squad outfitted in a bomb suit carries out a suspicious bag left at the state Capitol building in Olympia.

OLYMPIA, Wash. —

The State Capitol building in Olympia was evacuated after an unattended bag was found in the rotunda, the Washington State Patrol said on its Twitter account.

The WSP bomb squad responded after a dark-haired woman left a Macy's bag in a roped off area of the rotunda.

Police said the bag "contained a small package of papers with writings" that had some sort of political message.

The building was closed from 9:30 a.m. to noon.

Lawmakers are not in session at the Capitol, but staff members for the governor's office and other state agencies work at the complex.
