BAINBRIDGE ISLAND, Wash. —

An early-morning fire gutted a restaurant on Bainbridge Island, leaving nothing but a charred shell.

Fire crews were called to the two-alarm fire at the 122 Bar and Restaurant241 Winslow Way W., at 4:30 a.m. on Monday.

Firefighters had to fight the flames from the outside because the building had become too unstable and the roof had crumbled before crews arrived.

Firefighters worked to keep the fire from spreading to nearby businesses, and it was mostly knocked down by about 5:30 a.m.

“As soon as we got here, the whole place was just engulfed in flames and it was just gut-wrenching and just really shocking and just overwhelming,” said Art Carbajal, who is the restaurant owner’s brother.

The Bainbridge Island Fire Department said the business is a total loss.

“I mean it's a mess, it's awful, it's everything we've been working for is just gone. Absolutely everything,” said owner Kim Raymond.

The business celebrated its one-year anniversary in June.

“There isn't a whole lot of legitimate bars on the island just to go and hang out and listen to music, so it'll be missed,” said customer Anthony Tripp.

There is no word yet on what caused the blaze.
