KINGSTON, Wash. —

A 23-year-old man was hurt when a homemade explosive device blew up unexpectedly in Kingston Wednesday afternoon.

North Kitsap Fire and Rescue crews were called to a home shortly before 1:30 p.m. for a report of a fireworks mishap.

Firefighters arrived to find a man suffering from injuries to his hand, upper torso and face.

The man and his friends told crews that they'd built an explosive device by binding together legally obtained fireworks and tried to light it.

When the device did not ignite as expected, the 23-year-old investigated and was hurt by the delayed explosion.

He was transported to Harrison Hospital in Bremerton.

The man's injuries were not considered life-threatening.

The Kitsap County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident.
