Mall Shooting Victim Off Respirator, Condition Upgraded

Friends Raise Money for Victim

TACOMA, Wash. —

The man who may have tried to stop the Tacoma Mall shooter is awake and talking!

But Dan McKown is still paralyzed after being shot three times..and now, his friends are 'standing up' to help pay his staggering medical bills.

Dan McKown is a stand-up comic, well known in the local comedy circuit. Now, his fellow comedians are coming from around the country to put on benefit shows, to help a man they say saved lives.

Dan McKown's fellow comics say their talented friend is a hero, who now needs the help of his community..

Fellow comedian Lee Fleming jokes, “everybody says that old cliche, he'd give you the shirt off his back, even though nobody really wants to see him without his shirt on, he'd still do it anyway."

Ty Barnett describes McKown as, “the closest you'll find to a saint, he's everything except the wings, well, he wears a coat a lot, so he probably has wings under the coat.''

Dan McKown, has no health insurance, and is now partially paralyzed from being shot three times. He bravely confronted Dominick Maldonado, drew a pistol he was licensed to carry, and tried to stop the shooting.

Fleming says, “he’d be the type of person that would step right out in the middle of the hallway, and even give him the opportunity to surrender, to drop your weapon."

McKown went down without firing his pistol, giving many a chance to run away. Now, the community of comics who McKown is so much a part of, say it's time for the community to give back.

“Because this is somebody who risked his life,” Barnett says, “and he didn't have to. He could have done like everybody else was doing, like duck. But he said ‘ok I'm going to do something,’ and people need to know that, people need to understand that you don't have these people out here every day."

Anyone wishing to donate can do so at any Bank of America branch to the Dan McKown Medical Fund.
