Man Convicted Of Killing Child Back In Court

SEATTLE —

Michael Bishop was convicted in 2001 for the beating death of 4-year-old Diamond LaTour.

Bishop allegedly beat LaTour repeatedly over the course of 16 hours. She went into convulsions and died.

In 2001, Bishop made a deal with prosecutors and agreed to spend 18 years in prison for second-degree murder.

The state Supreme Court recently ruled that Bishop’s old conviction was to be thrown out because someone convicted of beating someone else cannot be convicted of murder -- even if that person dies as a result -- unless the state can prove a pattern of abuse.

LaTour’s family was in court Tuesday as Bishop, who is out of prison, appeared.

“Yeah we could get him put away for life, which could be the right thing to do,” LaTour’s grandmother Margorie Graham said.

According to Graham, prosecutors might charge Bishop with homicide by abuse and a conviction may mean more prison time for Bishop.

“Yeah, because, I don’t believe for one minute that any jury’s going to find him innocent. Not when it comes out what kind of damage he did to her over 16 hours. I mean, no, they’ll find him guilty,” Graham said.
