Man critical after Porsche crashes on I-5 near Bellingham

Bellingham, WA —

A medical condition may have led to a Friday night crash on Interstate 5 near Bellingham that left a driver in critical condition, the Washington State Patrol said.

The crash happened at about 5:30 p.m. near the Fairhaven Exit. Police said they received reports that a 47-year-old man was driving a 1987 Porsche 944 recklessly on northbound I-5 from Skagit County into Whatcom County. The man lost control of the car, struck a barrier on the right side of the freeway, crossed both lanes to the left and came to rest blocking the left lane.

The driver got out of the car and started walking away from it, the State Patrol said. Witnesses said the man was acting strangely and then fell down. It isn't known if the man's behavior was due to a medical emergency. Police said drugs or alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the crash.

Bill Boyd of the Bellingham Fire Department said four vehicles were involved in the wreck, which happened south of Old Fairhaven Parkway.

Police said initial reports that the man was struck by a semi truck were untrue.

He was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center in Bellingham with critical injuries. The State Patrol said the driver suffered fractured ribs. He was not wearing a seat belt.
