SEATTLE —
A man police said tried to break down his parents’ door with an ax while demanding money was later arrested after a standoff at his grandparents’ house in South Seattle.
Police said the incident started around 4:30 a.m. Monday when a drunken man arrived at his parents’ home in the 104 block of 57th Avenue South.
The caller said her 27-year-old son was at the door demanding money from his father and had hit the door several times with an ax, police said.
While officers were on their way to the home, they received additional information that the man had a gun and had left in a vehicle with his father.
Police said they came across the man's father at 56th Avenue South and Bangor Street. The man told officers his son had demanded money from him, displayed a weapon and told him to drive to Safeway on Rainer Avenue to get $400.
The man told police that no money was exchanged and he dropped his son off on South Bangor Street where he got out of the vehicle and walked to his grandparent’s house in the 107 block of 56th Ave South, still armed with a gun.
A SWAT team surrounded the house and roads in the area were blocked.
Eventually, negotiators were able to convince the man to come out peacefully around 6 a.m.
The man was booked into King County Jail on charges of attempted robbery and unlawful imprisonment.
Police said the man’s grandparents denied knowing that their grandson was armed and declined to allow the officers to search their home for a weapon.
