Man drowns at beach near Ilwaco

ILWACO, Wash. —

One man drowned Saturday afternoon in waters off of Benson Beach, according to the Pacific County Sheriff’s Office.

Scott L. Johnson of the Pacific County Sheriff’s Office said the Pacific County Communications Center received a 911 call at 3:30 p.m. of a person in distress in the ocean waters off of the beach, which is part of the Cape Disappointment State Park near Ilwaco.

John Beaumeir, 55, and Israel Anderson, 28, were in an inflatable raft.

According to Johnson, reports indicated that the rough waters capsized their raft several times and the men were able to get back on board.

When the raft capsized again, it partially deflated.

Johnson said Anderson got a hold of the raft and maintained control of a paddle which he used to get himself back to shore. Baumeir was separated from Anderson and was unable to make it to shore.

A Pacific County surf rescue team and the U.S. Coast Guard were dispatched to the scene.

The crew spotted Baumeir unconscious in the ocean, and they were able to get him to shore and start CPR.

The Pacific County Fire District No. 1 took Baumeir to Ocean Beach Hospital in Ilwaco where he was pronounced dead, according to the sheriff’s office.

Johnson said neither man was wearing a personal floatation device. Both men worked as nurses at Harborview Medical Center.
